There has been ongoing talk for many years about Gremlins 3, with Gremlins/Gremlins 2 star Zach Galligan recently trying to start a fan campaign to drum up interest in this long-awaited follow-up. While there is nothing official to announce yet, original Gremlins writer Chris Columbus has revealed that he’s actively developing a new Gremlins project, but it won’t be a sequel, it will be a reboot. Hooray another reboot… Yeah…
With that said a third instalment of Gremlins is unlikely to hit the big screens anytime soon (keep on dreaming) but the good news is that we be getting an all new animated series, Gremlins : Secrets of the Mogwai, instead.
WarnerMedia announced the animated series will serve as a prequel to the hugely popular 1984 classic Gremlins and the not so good but enjoyable 1990 sequel. Little has been revealed about the plot other than the new series is written by Tze Chun (Gotham) and will reveal how shopkeeper Mr. Wing discovered the adorable little Mogwai known as Gizmo. The story also introduces 10-year-old boy, Sam Wing and a teenage street thief named Elle, who go on a quest through the Chinese countryside to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure. The trio crosses paths with colourful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore, while the kids are also pursued by a greedy industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.
“A year ago I walked into Amblin to pitch this Gremlins animated prequel,” Tze Chun tweeted. “Thank you to Warner Bros and WarnerMedia for making this a reality!”
The new series will debut on the WarnerMedia streaming service. No word yet on casting or official release dates, but it’s on it’s way soon.
